Service Learning

Environmental Service Expedition

Fall

MapleStone is embarking on the “Environmental Service Expedition Project.” Our goal is to grow our capacity and skill as a learning organization to engage, nurture and teach our students through Environmental Service Learning, including watershed protection, trail development and trail maintenance, in partnership with the Three Rivers Land Trust (3RLT) and the Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance (AWWA).

Through our Environmental Service Expedition, we will deepen our current partnership with the 3RLT and expand a new partnership with AWWA. Our project will maximize the assets of our collective partnership to serve both our students and the rich wilderness and watersheds of York County.

Our Environmental Service Expedition serves two compelling needs. MapleStone students (and all students!) need and deserve powerful, engaging learning opportunities. 3RLT and AWWA need community support to protect, manage and showcase thousands of acres of wilderness and watersheds in York County. Together we will invest in students l earning important skills and knowledge and protecting the York County Environment through shared expertise and a vibrant, collaborative, mutually beneficial partnership.

Our Goals Are

  1. To develop student opportunities for service learning in our local environment and, concurrently, students learning about themselves, each other, and their responsibilities as leaders in their own lives.

  2. To grow environmental service-learning instructional skills to engage students in a variety of wilderness environments/wildlife habitats.

  3. To build strong, reciprocal, long-term partnerships with 3RLT and AWWA to help support our local communities through local conservation, service learning, and youth development.
