Mechanical Science

The Mechanical Science Program works with students through developing skills, knowledge, and habits of mind required in a variety of mechanical contexts from bike building and repair to welding and fabrication.

As part of their studies within the Mechanical Science Program, students learn discrete skills that will serve them across a range of activities, including:

  • Biking
  • Robotics
  • Metal Composites and Design
  • Creative Fusions

Core Concepts

In addition to the MapleStone Core Skills, the Mechanical Science Program utilizes key core concepts to support and integrate our work. Over the course of a year, students develop a deep understanding of the importance of these concepts. The concepts add both continuity and rigor to our work. They include:

  • Craftsmanship
  • Materials management
  • Time management
  • Safety

Essential Questions:

Our academic year is focused by a series of Essential Questions, broad “umbrella” questions that help students integrate a wide variety of learning opportunities. Such integration helps students make meaning and build durable learning. Our focus on each question spans from several weeks to the whole year.

Some sample questions:

  • Who do you want on your team?
  • What does it take to be a craftsman?
  • When do you know the bike is right?
  • What do I need to know and be able to do to have the future that I want?
